“Legally Dead” by Edna Buchanan

May 19, 2009

legallydeadMichael Venturi, a U.S. Marshall with the Witness Protection Program has made a career out of fashioning new lives for government witnesses. One of those he helped, a mobster and sexual predator, was sent to an unsuspecting community with tragic results. Venturi has had enough. He leaves the Marshall’s Service and decides to help innocent victims who need a new start. He assembles a team to help him create new identities for these people but soon one-by-one his clients are murdered.

Edna Buchanan is a Pulitzer-Prize winning crime reporter and the author of more than 17 mysteries. Since this is my first Buchanan novel I can’t compare it to her earlier works.  I found it to be quite a page turner even though many of the scenes are implausible and the ending was less than satisfying.

I’d give it a 2.5 stars on a scale of 1-5. (5 being outstanding)

May Book Discussion Group

May 1, 2009

On Wednesday, May 20 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. our book discussion group will meet to talk about “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America” by Erik Larson.

An Amazon.com review says “Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book’s categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair’s construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor… Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson’s skillful writing.”

Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend.

“Four Seasons in Rome”

May 1, 2009

4seasonscover_thumb1When author Anthony Doerr opened a letter on the day that his wife gave birth to twin sons, he had no idea how his life would change in the next year. Anthony had won the prestigious Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and would get to spend a year with his family in Rome Italy.

The story of that year – learning to be a father, experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of Rome as well as the funeral of Pope John Paul II – is exquisite. The writing is masterful. Booksense calls it “funny, insightful, tender and wise.” I couldn’t agree more.

Highly recommended.  A wonderful travel narrative.
