March book discussion

February 21, 2008

Cortland Free Library’s book pick (actually part of the countywide read) for March is “Fahrenheit 451″ by Ray Bradbury.

“Frightening in its implications… Mr Bradbury’s account of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own, is fascinating.” – New York Times

Join us for a discussion of the book on Wednesday, March 19 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. or on Thursday morning March 20 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

April’s pick will be “Memoirs of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden.  April’s dates are the 23rd and 24th.

What should we have for dinner?

February 21, 2008

omnivoresdilemma_med.jpg    “This book is a long and fairly involved answer to this seemingly simple question. Along the way, it also tries to figure out how such a simple question could ever have gotten so complicated.”

So begins the “Omnivore’s Dilemma – A Natural History of Four Meals” by noted author and journalist Michael Pollan. He explores industrial food, organic food and food we forage ourselves and takes a close look at the American way of eating.

It’s an eye-opener. Now I better understand the importance of corn, what really happens in a feedlot, what organic really means, and much more. Highly recommended. – Jan

Here’s a photo of Nancy in our art gallery surrounded by just some of the books on the Roosevelt era that we have in our collection. - Jan

“Math Doesn’t Suck”

February 19, 2008

Review by Cortland Free Library’s Crystal Tullio -

When she isn’t acting, Danica McKellar (Winnie of “The Wonder Years”) is writing. Her book features graphics, personality quizzes, horoscopes and …math! Her book, “Math Doesn’t Suck,” features real-life at-the-mall examples of concepts such as reciprocal fractions and prime factorization. McKellar offers girls a “Pretty in Pink” approach to learning math, an approach that helped her learn math concepts when she was struggling in seventh grade. Though it’s not for everyone, her approach will appeal to girls who prefer their lessons to be applied to real life. This is definitely a cool approach to learning. Check the book out and see for yourself!

“Say you have $50, and you want to buy a fabulous blue sundress that costs $62. Bummer! Not enough money. But wait, there’s a sale tag that says it 1/5 off. Do you have enough money now?” – excerpt from “Math Doesn’t Suck.”
