Change of day for pre-school story time

Starting in February our pre-school story time will switch from Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. to Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

A brief reprieve

As you may have noticed in the article on the front page of the Cortland Standard last night, the library has received some donations that will postpone implementing the changes that Director Kay Zaharis previously outlined in a guest editorial in the Cortland Standard. But this is only a brief reprieve.

We are still asking library patrons to contact their common council representative before February 5th to ask them to consider reinstating some of the $50,000 that was cut from the library funding. Also, if you can, please attend the common council meeting on February 5th at 7:00 p.m. on the second floor of city hall. The library will be on the agenda that evening. Thank you!

Adult Book Discussion for February

The February book pick is “Plainsong” by Kent Haruf. “Plainsong,” written in 1999, is an “unforgettable tale both emotionally complex and elemental, following, as it so gracefully does, the cycle of life, death and rebirth.” (Booklist review)

Everyone is welcome to join us. The group will meet in the staff room of the library on Wednesday, February 20 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. or Thursday, February 21 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Reminder – Book Discussions

Tonight (Jan. 23) we will have a book discussion group at 6:30 p.m. downstairs in the library.

Tomorrow (Jan. 24) we will have another book discussion group at 10 a.m. also downstairs in the library.

The book for discussion for both groups is “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen. Everyone is welcome to attend.

We still need your support. If you have not done so already, please contact the common council members to voice your support and ask to reinstate at least some of the $50,000 that was cut from the library’s funding.

Support for the library

Thanks to all who called, e-mailed or spoke to members of the common council to voice their support for the library. An extra BIG  thank-you to all those who braved the icy weather last night to show up at the common council meeting.

There will no doubt be many changes ahead in 2008. We will keep you posted.

Calling All Patrons!

The City of Cortland has voted to reduce their financial support to the Cortland Free Library by 25%!

This will have a major impact on our ability to serve you, our patrons.

Please contact your Common Council representative to tell them how much you value your library and ask them to please vote to restore the money for the library.

The next Common Council meeting is Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the courtroom on the second floor of city hall. Please attend and show your support for the library.
