“The Hearts of Horses”

December 16, 2007

I just finished an exciting new novel by Molly Gloss about a strong, independent young woman who has a knack of “gentling” wild horses. Set in 1917 in eastern Oregon, the story tells the tale of Martha Lessen who is trying to make it in the man’s world of breaking horses, and does it in an unconventional way. The story is simple yet moving, very similar to one of my favorite books, “Plainsong” by Kent Haruf. If you like stories about the American West or horses or strong women, or all three as I do, this book is a must read. – Jan

Lee Taylor

December 15, 2007

Hats off to Leland B. Taylor, better known as Lee Taylor, who since 1951 has served on the Board of Trustees of the Cortland Free Library. This past Wednesday was Lee’s last board meeting. The front-page of the Cortland Standard on Thursday, December 13 has a story about Lee’s service to the library.dsc01667.jpg Here’s a photo taken at the board meeting of Lee with his wife Rosemary.

Finding information about New York State

December 7, 2007

The Office of the Attorney General of the state of New York recently unveiled a new website, “Project Sunlight” that puts a wealth of information under one roof.

Here’s what Andrew Cuomo says about the website:
“Project Sunlight is an effort by my office to promote your right to know and to monitor governmental decision-making. This website – the first of its kind in New York – allows you to easily access statewide government information that until now has been scattered and difficult to retrieve.”

“Currently, we are working on the first phase of this project: collecting and standardizing different data and making it available to you on a comprehensive, easy-to-search website. During this initial phase, you have the ability to search the Project Sunlight website to examine information related to campaign finance, legislation, lobbying activity, and recipients of state government contracts.”

Find it at www.sunlightny.com.
